Once a sleepy fishing village, Labuan Bajo is now the main hub for visitors wanting to explore East Nusa Tenggara, recognized as one of the best dive spots in the world.

If Flores, Komodo Island and its surroundings are on your itinerary, this quick guide will show you how to reach this port town, best time to visit, and many more.

Getting there

Labuan Bajo is located on the westernmost tip of Flores. If you’re boarding an international flight, the island can be reached via Jakarta, Bali or Lombok. Domestic flights to Labuan Bajo’s Komodo Airport are available daily from either of those cities.

Best time to visit

It’s an all year round sunshine destination, so you can visit at any time. Having said that, some travelers prefer to skip January-March, when it’s likely to rain, or July-August, when it hits peak tourist season.

During April-June, the sea is calm with clear underwater visibility, so it’s often considered as the best time to discover the marine life and spot the ancient dragons in the wild. September-December is known as the mantas season, so avid divers and snorkelers might want to plan their diving adventure just in time.

Things to do

While most consider Labuan Bajo as a gateway to Komodo Island, there are actually plenty of things to experience here. If you’re a foodie, get a taste of authentic local food and head to Kampung Ujung. Sunset lovers might also want to visit Bukit Cinta, Bukit Amelia, and Bukit Silvia, which offer the best vantage points in town.
